One could have called the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB customer deception. Nvidia has now decided against the original release plans.

The GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB will no longer reach the market under this name. Nvidia announced this in a short message, in which Nvidia reflects the general opinion: Two completely different graphics cards with a 4080 designation are “confusing” – one could also speak of customer deception.
Nvidia’s blog says: “The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it doesn’t have the right name. Two GPUs labeled 4080 are confusing, so we’re hitting the ‘unlaunch’ button on the 4080 12GB.”
GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB calls for a 70s model, in this case, a GeForce RTX 4070. The GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB not only has 4 GB less memory than the GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB. The AD104, it also uses a significantly smaller GPU than the 16 GB model with the AD103 chip. The GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB has 21 percent fewer shader cores; a little extra GPU clock reduces the raw performance difference to around 18 percent.

Presentation as GeForce RTX 4070 (Ti)?
Nvidia did not comment on the further plans for the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB. However, since the market launch should take place in November 2022, partner manufacturers such as Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI are likely to have already produced numerous graphics cards. A sale under a new name, therefore, seems obvious. The manufacturers have taken the product pages for the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB offline.
The most logical variants would be GeForce RTX 4070 or maybe GeForce RTX 4070 Ti – with the Ti models typically only appearing as stronger variants with a time lag. If Nvidia decides to change the name, there is a big question mark over the pricing.
With the 80s naming, Nvidia was able to argue (more or less successfully) for a recommended price of 1099 euros. For a 1970s model, a price recommendation would only be in the direction of 1000 euros and would not bode well for an upcoming GeForce RTX 4060.
Without the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB, only the GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB will appear in November. In the blog, Nvidia specified the presentation date as November 16th.
