At a time when smartphones tend to all look the same, some brands are trying to offer completely different products. And among these, there is The Minimal Company, a brand that has just presented its new idea called The Minimal Phone, in a discussion on Reddit. For the moment, the product is not marketed, but it could soon land on a crowdfunding platform, before being launched.

As its name suggests, the Minimal Phone is intended to be a minimalist product. The designer’s idea is to offer a product that allows the user to stay connected, while spending less time on their smartphone. Instead of the OLED or LCD screens that we have on modern smartphones, the Minimal Phone uses an E Ink type screen. The advantage of this is that it consumes little energy. So, Minimal estimates that with its 4,000 mAh battery lasts 4 days.

To ensure a smooth typing experience, despite the use of E Ink technology, the Minimal Phone is equipped with a touch keyboard, below the screen, which should please those nostalgic for old BlackBerrys. In terms of dimensions, the Minimal Phone has a width of 72mm, a height of 120mm, and a thickness of 10mm. “It’s as thick as a classic blackberry which, when held in the hand, feels fantastic, in my opinion,” says Andre Youkhna, CEO of The Minimal Company, about it.

The right compromise?

The Minimal Company is not the first brand to design a minimalist smartphone, intended to reduce its user’s screen time. But this one stands out from the Light Phone, for example, thanks to its operating system. Indeed, MnmlOS provides access to essential applications in modern life, such as navigation, VTC apps, etc. MnmlOS is a lighter version of Android and as such, it should support apps designed for Android.

Moreover, in terms of connectivity, it has essential features, including Wifi and Bluetooth. And support for 5G is even under study. For messaging, the smartphone will also be compatible with RCS technology, which is the default messaging for Android and which will soon be supported by iOS.

“In summary, the Minimal Phone, powered by MnmlOS, offers a unique combination of minimalist design, essential modern features, robust security and privacy features, setting it apart from competitors like the Light Phone or Mudita. It is designed for users who seek a balanced digital experience, combining the convenience of modern technology with the principles of digital minimalism,” explains Andre Youkhna.

  • In any case, if this smartphone interests you, know that its designer plans to sell it for 400 dollars.
